All those nihilistic feelings are due to low dopamine. I've been there too. Feeling as dead and flat as a pancake.

Importance of noradrenaline

Dopamine and noradrenaline are synergistic. With dopamine, you'll feel motivated and have the desire to do things, but without noradrenaline, you won't have the energy or focus to make it happen.

When anti-depressants first came on the market, they focused only on serotonin (SSRIs). This helped people feel better, but didn't do anything for motivation or energy. It made people complacent. You're not depressed, but you're not happy either.

SSRIs also had a high risk of causing sexual side effects, such as zero libido, erectile dysfunction and anorgasmia.

Then came the SNRIs (serotonin and noradrenaline reuptake inhibitors). These have a much lower risk of sexual dysfunction (shows you how important noradrenaline is for sexual function). Plus people generally feel more energized, motivated, focused and happy compared to SSRIs.

Dopaminergic and noradrenergic drugs are commonly used/abused to enhance energy, motivation, libido, sexual function, etc.


Noradrenaline is crucial for proper LH release

Anything that promotes the release of noradrenaline or acts on the adrenergic system, can increase LH.

How to increase dopamine and noradrenaline

Increase dopamine

Noradrenaline is created from dopamine and if dopamine is low, noradrenaline will also be low.

The easiest way to increase noradrenaline is to increase dopamine.

To increase dopamine synthesis you want to maximize the cofactors in tyrosine hydroxylase and aromatic amino acid decarboxylase, namely BH4 (cofactor), iron and vitamin B6. Without them, no synthesis will happen.

Here are some roadblocks you might run into:

  • BH4 creation
    • It's an anti-oxidant and gets depleted by oxidative stress
    • Methylation issues will impair BH4 creation
  • Iron regulation
    • Just because you're eating an iron-rich diet doesn't mean that the body is properly utilizing it.
  • Vitamin B6 activation
    • Vitamin B6 needs to be activated for it to be used. Supplementing the active form doesn't always increase active B6 in the body.

Blasting dopaminergic herbs and drugs without fixing the basics won't do anything for you. And it could do more harm than good.


Boost dopamine beta-hydroxylase (DBH)

This enzyme converts dopamine to noradrenaline and uses copper and vitamin C as cofactors (there are 2 more cofactors which I'll discuss in the masterclass)


It's not always as simple as taking all the cofactors.

Certain bacteria can create a toxin that inhibits this enzyme. Without eradicating this bacteria, this enzyme won't work properly.
